This year, between 15th and 31st March, some of the SG Team took their spring-cleaning efforts to the next level by pledging to collect 10 bags of litter as part of the Great British Spring Clean.
The scheme, co-ordinated by Keep Britain Tidy is the nations biggest, mass action, environmental campaign with over 400,000 bags pledged this year…. 425,626 to be exact!
These bags of litter would otherwise have remained in our beautiful outdoors, posing a threat to not only us, but wildlife and marine life too. It takes around a whopping 200 years for aluminium cans to decompose, plastic bags and bottles can take from 200 up to 500 years and glass bottles, wait for it, can take up to a million years!
The team received praise from various members of the public whilst out litter picking, and we feel proud that we really made a difference to the places we picked litter around our office in Low Fell, and around people’s homes and parks across the North East.
Litter picking is a simple action anyone can do. It makes an immediate and visible difference to the environment where we live, work and play. Be warned though, its addictive!
