Southern Green are going wild…well we’re helping our clients to go wild…ecologically speaking. We’ve recently been appointed as Lead Consultant working on proposals for the 4070acre Bulwick and Harringworth Estate in Northamptonshire. Our client has a thrilling vision for rewilding parts of their land, a movement that is taking the Nation (and world) by storm, as landowners, public bodies and ecologically minded individuals make efforts to restore natural processes to our landscape and to then link these projects together to create county scale ecological corridors and vast interlinked ecosystems.
Our work at Bulwick and Harringworth is in its infancy but our friends at MKA Ecology have been working away for the past few weeks gathering baseline data at the estate and there have been a few exciting finds already including some interesting botanical species within and area of former ironstone quarry workings.
The wider team will go on to undertake extensive environmental appraisal and survey of the estate’s landscape, ecological and heritage assets and to develop an Estate Management Plan that would contribute to a Countryside Stewardship Scheme application. The estate’s aims are to:
- rejuvenate native species and habitats across the estate;
- introduce rare native livestock to contribute to reviving natural ecological processes on site through work with the Rare Breeds Association;
- consider the heritage of the estate and restoration of the estate parkland;
- manage the extensive access network across the estate to protect and improve public access and maximise local understanding of and engagement with the estate’s vision for rewilding
We’ll follow up with the exciting findings of this work as they develop so keep in touch and if you have any thought on doing something similar with your land or know someone who does, please get in touch and we’d be delighted to assist.
