Today, September 23rd is the official September Equinox. This marks the start of Autumn for the Northern Hemisphere, and start of Spring for the Southern Hemisphere.
Humans that lived a long time before us used the sky as both a clock and a calendar. The suns path, length of daylight and the location of the sunrise and sunset, allowed our ancestors to track the shifts in seasons throughout the year.
For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, the signs that summer has gone and winter is coming are everywhere. Dawns are later and sunsets are earlier. There is definitely a chill in the air, and creatures are beginning to gain weight and put on their winter coats for warmth (along with the rest of us!). Birds and butterflies begin to migrate southwards, following the path of the sun, and squirrels and other animals begin to collect food and store it away for the long winter months. All around us trees and plants are ending this year’s cycle of growth, and they are adorned with glorious shimmering gold, yellow, orange and red leaves.
