Southern Green is excited to announce that we have been appointed by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council to redevelop the public realm of Redcar, as Lead Consultant and Landscape Architects. This project is part of Redcar’s £25m Town Investment Plan (TIP).
Southern Green will help redevelop several public realm spaces within the following projects:
- Project 1 -Town Centre Transformation (Attractive High Street, New Events Space, and the Esplanade)
- Project 2 - Station Road Public Realm
The history of Redcar contains some prominent figures, such as Samuel Plimsoll who invented the Plimsoll Line, which indicates the maximum depth to which the vessel may be safely immersed when loaded with cargo. Samuel Plimsoll lived at 37 High Street (now the closed Marks and Spencer Outlet). In addition, Redcar is also famous for the oldest surviving lifeboat, the Zetland Lifeboat invented by Henry Greathead from South Shields. Stationed in 1802, the lifeboat is now housed within the Zetland Lifeboat Museum on the Esplanade. There is also an ancient petrified forest along the coast of Redcar!
Following the appointment, staff have been taking trips down to Redcar to survey the Town Centre, and to observe how the site is currently being used on a day-to-day basis. We could not have topped the day without Redcar’s classic Lemon Top from Pacitto, and fish and chips!
Whilst developing the designs for the Town Centre, Southern Green was invited by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council to carry out a public consultation, show-casing the initial designs for the High Street, New Events Space, Esplanade, and Station Road.
