We are delighted to have assisted with the design and implementation of the Cassiobury wetlands restoration project in Cassiobury Park, Watford. The River Gade, a globally rare chalkstream supplies water to the former watercress beds which have been transformed into a permanent wetland habitat. The scheme will enhance the Local Nature Reserve site through providing vital habitat for wintering brids, amphibians, reptiles and invertebrates. As well as the restoration of the watercress beds, the scheme included the creation of backwater habitats from the chalkstream. Southern Green worked collaboratively with Watford Borough Council, the Environment Agency, and Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust to ensure the necessary approvals were in place prior to deliver the project. The scheme was expertly delivered by Miles Water Engineering following the need for extensive ecology surveys.
Elected Mayor of Watford , Peter Taylor, commented: "The restoration of this wetland area holds great significance as we work towards reviving the ecological diversity that has declined over the past four decades. By preserving the watercress bed structures, restoring ponds and channels, and addressing silt accumulation, we are taking vital steps towards enhancing the habitat for wildlife to thrive".
“We are grateful for the collaboration of organisations like Friends of Cassiobury Park, the Environment Agency, and Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust, ensuring a well-informed and ecologically sound approach to this project."
