The park was formerly the private estate of Whickham Chase which included a fine Georgian villa and garden overlooking the village green. Although the house was demolished in 1960, the remaining historic features contribute greatly to the character of Whickham town centre. Southern Green was commissioned by The Friends of Chase Park to prepare a feasibility study for the park and subsequently was commissioned by Gateshead Council to prepare successful HLF bids and administer the works on site.
The project focused on the conservation and restoration of the key heritage features including the windmill, entrance gates and stone walls, path system, and tree and shrub management. The project also included improving access through the park, installation of a new play area and MUGA, tennis court surfacing improvements, creation of a new community garden as well as street furniture and artworks.
