South Cliff Gardens is a 16ha cliff side public gardens with over 250 years of architectural and designed landscape development, including works by George Knowles, Joseph Paxton, and Scarborough Borough Engineer Harry Smith.
The play area at South Cliff Gardens enables users to navigate steep, wooded slopes, and capitalises on the breathtaking views that span the Scarborough coastline. From the project's inception, the brief was to create a diverse play space that caters for all ages and abilities, whilst maximising the unique contours of the sloping landscape. The resulting play area emerges as a jewel within the Gardens, harmoniously responding to the aesthetic nuances of architectural features and surrounding landscape character.
The wider restoration project included significant upgrades to infrastructure including a new 2km accessible route, drainage works, extensive tree removals to improve woodland health and increase biodiversity, signage, and a new operations centre.
