Southern Green is delighted to have been appointed by Newcastle City Council to prepare a design to create a welcoming gateway to the city where people can sit and relax, to provide an improved setting around the impressive George Stephenson Monument.
The works include new granite and caithness paving throughout to match the central gateway materials palette, high quality timber bench modular seating, new lighting and a raised bespoke planter outside of the Union Rooms and Vita Student accommodation buildings. A granite paving band runs through the scheme representing the approximate line of the Roman Frontier. The first phase of softworks planting included a large mature specimen tree, clipped hedging and spring bulbs. The final phase of planting was completed at the end of April 2019 and include a mix of low level herbaceous perennials and grasses to extend the seasonal interest long into Autumn and early Winter.
