Tyne Bridge Tower
The demolition of the Tyne Bridge Tower in 2011 removed a major eyesore at a key location adjacent to the Tyne Bridge at the entrance to Gateshead Quays. Southern Green was commissioned by One North East to develop a temporary, low cost landscape scheme for the site which responded to the neighbouring buildings such as St. Mary’s Church and The Sage.
The land was contoured and a striking, low maintenance, contemporary design was developed consisting of waves of ornamental grasses set within mown grass and punctuated by a drift of multi-stemmed birch trees. The design took advantage of site’s location and the dramatic views down to it from the Tyne Bridge.
