Following a successful submission as part of a design competition, Southern Green was appointed by Newcastle University to complete the detailed design for this new public square at the heart of the university campus.
The design includes a large range of seating areas and bespoke seating types to maximise usage of the space throughout the day. The contemporary layout of low walls and planting beds enhances the natural desire lines throughout the space, maximises key views of the surrounding listed buildings and provides dynamic spaces within the square for student interaction.
The design observes the coherent campus university strategy through the use of materials and street furniture to match the surrounding areas, which also help the contemporary layout harmonise with the traditional surrounding buildings. At the heart of the space is an intimate seating area centred around three large sculptures, which combine to form one piece 'Generation' by local artist Joe Hillier.
