Southern Green was commissioned to prepare the detailed design for this high profile city centre space having won the tender via a design competition.

Working with Mawson Kerr Architects, Southern Green prepared an HLF Townscape Heritage bid to successfully secure funding for this prestigious project and was subsequently commissioned to carry out the final tender and construction stage.

Proposals for the scheme include bespoke design features (seating, artwork and text carving) with inspiration being drawn from historical references which give the area its unique character. In recognition of the high quality of the scheme, and its success in reinstating the Bigg Market as a much loved destination space, this scheme received the 2019 Lord Mayor’s Award in the ‘Landscape’ category.

The project has been shortlisted in the Construction Excellence North East (CENE) Award 2023, under the Conservation and Regeneration category.
